NIKE Announces Return of Long-Time Nike Veteran Elliott Hill as CEO

Nike has declared Elliott Hill's comeback as its CEO, scheduled to begin on October 14, 2024, succeeding John Donahoe in a major shift in leadership for the worldwide sportswear empire. Hill, an experienced Nike executive with a 32-year tenure, is anticipated to spearhead initiatives aimed at rejuvenating the brand and tackling falling sales in the face of increasing competition from up-and-coming brands such as On and Deckers’ Hoka.

Hill initially became a part of Nike as an intern in 1988 and gradually climbed the ladder, assuming different positions of authority before stepping down from his role as President of Consumer and Marketplace in 2020. His LinkedIn profile, which detailed his career path at Nike, also gained widespread attention. He played a key role in steering Nike's marketing plans, managing some of its biggest brands like the legendary Jordan collection, and played a part in the company's expansion to surpass $39 billion in yearly sales.

Reflecting on his comeback, Hill mentioned, “Nike has always been a core part of who I am, and I’m ready to help lead it to an even brighter future. For 32 years, I’ve had the privilege of working with the best in the industry, helping to shape our company into the magical place it is today.” He also conveyed his enthusiasm to rekindle connections with former colleagues and forge new alliances to propel the company ahead.

Hill's journey from an intern to the CEO position stands out, especially considering his relentless effort from the start of his career. Upon completing his studies at Ohio University, he spent six months actively seeking employment at Nike. In an interview on the FORTitude podcast, Hill mentioned, “I persisted with the company representative for six months until he decided to offer me a position. I mentioned to him, ‘everyone in my class has a job except me.’” This perseverance was fruitful, leading him to progress from an intern to the Director of Team Sports in 1998 and further advancing in his career, ultimately retiring as a senior executive.
