Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face, one of the world’s leading open-source artificial intelligence platforms, for $12.9 billion, The Information reported on Wednesday, citing a person familiar with the deal. If completed, the acquisition would significantly expand Nvidia’s presence beyond chips and computing infrastructure and deeper into the software and AI model ecosystem.
According to The Information, acquisition discussions began after Hugging Face received interest from another potential buyer. The platform has become an important hub for AI developers, researchers and companies to collaborate, test and share open-source models and tools.
Business Insider separately reported that Nvidia had been in talks to acquire Hugging Face. The report followed earlier indications that Hugging Face had been working with a bank to evaluate interest from potential bidders. The reports could not be independently verified, and neither Nvidia nor Hugging Face immediately commented on the potential transaction.
If the acquisition goes ahead, it would give Nvidia control of one of the most widely used platforms in the open-source AI community. Hugging Face hosts and distributes a vast collection of AI models, datasets and development tools, giving Nvidia an opportunity to strengthen its position across the software layer that sits on top of its powerful computing hardware.
The potential deal would also fit Nvidia’s broader strategy of becoming a more deeply integrated part of the AI technology stack. The company has traditionally been best known for its graphics processors, but it has increasingly expanded into networking, software, cloud infrastructure, AI platforms and other parts of the ecosystem.
Nvidia has also been pursuing a more aggressive investment and partnership strategy across the AI industry. The company recently entered into a $20 billion licensing agreement with AI chip startup Groq, adding to a growing list of deals designed to strengthen its position as AI infrastructure spending accelerates.
Analysts say Hugging Face could be a natural fit for Nvidia because the chipmaker has increasingly positioned itself as supportive of both open-source and proprietary AI models. Hugging Face’s large developer community would give Nvidia direct access to an ecosystem that is becoming increasingly important to the development and deployment of AI.
Fund manager Siddy Jobe of Eonopolis Exponential Technologies said Nvidia’s interest in Hugging Face makes strategic sense because the company appears to be pursuing a broader role across the entire AI technology stack. In addition to providing the computing infrastructure required to train and run AI models, Nvidia is increasingly seeking influence over the software and foundational models that use that infrastructure.
The potential acquisition could therefore represent a major shift in Nvidia’s strategy. Rather than remaining primarily a supplier of the hardware powering the AI revolution, the company would gain a stronger foothold in the platforms where developers build, share and deploy AI models.
Hugging Face’s open-source focus would also give Nvidia a stronger connection to one of the fastest-growing communities in artificial intelligence. Open-source models have become increasingly important as developers and businesses seek alternatives to proprietary systems and look for greater control over how AI models are developed and deployed.
The proposed acquisition comes at a time when Hugging Face is also facing growing scrutiny around AI security. The platform was recently affected by a hacking incident that highlighted the cybersecurity challenges emerging alongside the rapid development of increasingly powerful AI tools.
Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue, a prominent supporter of open-source AI, attributed the incident to engineering mistakes and said the company used an Nvidia version of a Chinese open-source model as part of its response. He has argued that AI-driven cybersecurity will become a major global industry and that open models could play a central role in its development.
For Nvidia, acquiring Hugging Face would therefore be about more than adding another AI company to its portfolio. It could provide the chipmaker with a strategic bridge between computing hardware, AI software, open-source models and the developers building the next generation of applications.
At $12.9 billion, the reported deal would also underscore how highly Nvidia values control and influence over the broader AI ecosystem. As competition intensifies across chips, models and AI applications, Nvidia appears increasingly determined to ensure that its technology remains embedded throughout the stack rather than being limited to the hardware layer.
The transaction, however, has not been officially confirmed, and its final structure and terms could still change. If completed, the acquisition would rank among Nvidia’s most significant moves into AI software and could reshape the relationship between the world’s dominant AI chipmaker and the rapidly expanding open-source AI community.
